committed to green architecture

As part of Stuart Silk Architects, the Commercial Studio is committed to building green. The studio is at the forefront of implementing innovative Green Architecture concepts to improve and protect the environment and to promote healthier and safer buildings. In every project we seek design solutions that are not only energy- and resource-efficient, comfortable, and healthy but represent long-term savings for the building owner.

In the past we have used green building materials such as low-V.O.C. paints, caulks, and carpets, highly reflective roofing materials, and ozone-safe refrigerants in mechanical systems. But we have taken our thinking a step further designing buildings that are greener by their very nature. As an example, see the green features for Salmon Bay Landing Office Condominiums.

Although we are required by local codes to meet certain green building standards, we have worked with many clients to exceed the criteria and incorporate even more green features into our designs. Incorporating green building practices into energy-efficient designs and specifications ultimately produces cost savings, reduces health risks, and betters our community. In the end, the goals of green programs throughout the nation are the same: to encourage a new era of building that is healthier, produces less waste, and uses less natural resources. Our objective is to increase the public's awareness of environmentally friendly green design through education and carefully conceived architectural design.

West Seattle Dental Building

Our most current green project is a 15,000 SF dental office in West Seattle. Some of anticipated sustainable features are:

  • LEED Silver – We have a goal of an USGBC LEED Silver certification.
  • CFMU Construction - combines energy efficient insulation with recycled concrete.
  • Smart Beams – span further with less material
  • Green Roof – An intensive green roof to insulate the building and control run-off
  • HVAC – We will be using an innovative VRFZ heating and cooling system
