Bending Paths

Zhongkai Sheshan Villas, Shanghai, China

Curving walls define space and emanate like rings from a stone dropped into a pond. The house is respectful of Chinese culture by preventing direct views as each sight line follows the gentle curve of the walls. Entering the house, the resident can choose between two journeys. The first continues along curving walls to the bedroom wing, creating an interior path much like the meandering streets of ancient cities. The second pathway ends at the great room pavilion.
