Dissolving Walls

Zhongkai Sheshan Villas, Shanghai, China

The principle organizing elements of this villa are three tall and thick stone walls, stretching above all three levels of the house. The walls symbolize endurance and strength, their beauty increasing with the passage of time much like the ancient walls of Greece, Mexico, and China. Passages and viewports are created through the walls, linking exterior to interior and one living space to the next. The entry is a simple, glass pivoting door in one wall. The strong walls begin to dissolve as one moves deeper into the house and walls of glass appear to maximize the light. The dining and living rooms and study face south with views of the pool and landscaped garden. In the second-floor master bedroom, steps lead to a garden terrace above the living room - creating a private sanctuary with views of the gardens below and the mountain and monastery beyond. On the lower level, a game room and guest suite open onto a sunken terrace. A private service stairway leads to the maid quarters, away from home's primary circulation.
