Shadows and LightZhongkai Sheshan Villas, Shanghai, China Bordered by streets and located at the community's entry, this site's constraints demanded an architectural design that could offer privacy to its inhabitants. In response, the house is covered with a woven stainless-steel mesh "skin" held ten centimeters away from the entire exterior. The skin provides privacy for the residents while allowing light to permeate the spaces. During the day, the mesh casts interesting shadows on the interior floors and walls. At night, exterior spotlights create dramatic patterns and shadowy textures. Inside, a Zen garden courtyard is the main organizing feature of the villa, providing a tranquil garden experience that can be appreciated from all the principal rooms. A water feature appears to pass under the house and reflects dancing shadows on the smooth wall surfaces. From the master suite on the upper level, steps lead down to a private garden terrace with its own outdoor fireplace. Territorial views of the gardens, the mountain, and the monastery add to the tranquility of this outdoor living space. |
